ACNE
What is Acne?
This is a common skin condition that occurs when the hair follicles become clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. It can manifest as different types of blemishes, including pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, and cysts. It most commonly appears on the face, but it can also affect the chest, back, and other areas of the body.
Why Does Acne Occur?
- Excess Oil Production: The sebaceous glands in the skin produce an oily substance called sebum. When the glands produce too much sebum, it can mix with dead skin cells and clog the hair follicles, leading to acne breakouts.
- Bacteria: The skin naturally harbours bacteria, including Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes). When the hair follicles become clogged, bacteria can multiply and cause inflammation, contributing to the formation of the problem.
- Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations, such as those that occur during puberty, menstrual cycles, or hormonal imbalances, can stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum and increase the likelihood of a breakout.
- Lifestyle Factors: Diet, stress, and sugar levels significantly influence the skin. Consuming a diet high in refined carbohydrates and unhealthy fats can worsen skin, while a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains promotes healthier skin. Emotional stress triggers hormonal imbalances that contribute also, and high sugar levels can lead to increased sebum production and inflammation. By maintaining a balanced diet, managing stress levels, and moderating sugar intake, you can support clearer and more radiant skin.
- Genetics: Acne can also have a genetic component. If your parents or close relatives had acne, you may be more prone to developing it as well.
