DRY Skin

What is Dry Skin?

Dry skin, also known as xerosis, is a common skin condition characterised by a lack of moisture and inadequate hydration in the skin. It can manifest as rough, tight, or flaky skin, and may sometimes be accompanied by itching or irritation.

Why Does Dry Skin Occur?

Dry skin can occur due to various factors, including:

  • Environmental Factors: Exposure to harsh weather conditions, such as cold temperatures, low humidity, or excessive heat, can strip the skin of its natural moisture and contribute to dryness.
  • Ageing: As we age, the skin’s ability to retain moisture decreases, leading to dryness and a weakened skin barrier function.
  • Skin Conditions: Certain skin conditions, such as eczema or psoriasis, can cause chronic dryness and skin barrier dysfunction.
  • Allergies: Allergic reactions can manifest as dry, itchy skin. Exposure to allergens triggers an immune response, leading to inflammation and disruption of the skin’s moisture barrier.
  • Stress: When stress levels rise, it can disrupt the skin’s natural balance. Stress triggers the release of certain hormones that can impair the skin’s ability to retain moisture, leading to dryness and discomfort.
  • Compromised Skin Barrier: A healthy skin barrier acts as a protective shield, preventing moisture loss and shielding against external irritants. However, factors such as excessive cleansing, harsh products, or environmental factors can compromise this barrier, resulting in increased water evaporation and dry skin.
  • Lifestyle Factors: Excessive bathing, using harsh soaps or cleansers, prolonged exposure to hot water, and frequent use of drying skincare products can disrupt the skin’s natural moisture balance and contribute to dryness.
  • Underlying Health Conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as thyroid disorders or diabetes, can affect skin hydration and contribute to dry skin.
